Cameron Girvin, Christopher Reese Obituary, Death News – Two Virginia police officers lost their lives in a fatal shooting during a routine traffic stop late Friday night. The suspect responsible for the attack was also killed, according to officials.
Virginia Beach Police Department officers Cameron Girvin and Christopher Reese were shot by a driver who pulled a gun on them during a struggle outside his vehicle. Police Chief Paul Neudigate described the slain officers as “heroes” who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving their community. Both were taken to local hospitals, where they were later pronounced dead—Reese at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital just after midnight and Girvin at Virginia Beach General Hospital around 4:30 a.m.
Girvin, 25, had served with the department since 2020, while Reese, 30, had joined in 2022 after previously working with the Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office.
The Confrontation
The incident began around 11:27 p.m. Friday when the officers attempted to stop a blue Hyundai Sonata due to expired license plates on South Rosemont Road. The driver refused to pull over, leading the officers to follow the vehicle until it reached a dead-end on Sylvan Court.
Once stopped, the suspect initially refused to exit the car but eventually complied. However, as soon as he stepped out, a physical altercation broke out between him and the officers.
During the struggle, the driver pulled a concealed handgun from his pocket and opened fire, shooting both officers. According to Neudigate, the officers did not fire their weapons at the suspect. After they collapsed to the ground, the gunman shot them a second time while they were defenseless.
Captured on Video
Body cameras and in-car cameras recorded the entire incident, providing clear evidence of what took place. Neudigate described the chilling footage, stating that after the suspect “executed our officers,” he calmly walked away from the scene.
Emergency responders and additional officers arrived quickly and attempted lifesaving measures, but both officers succumbed to their injuries. Their families and colleagues gathered at the hospitals to grieve their loss.
Authorities have not yet released details about the suspect, and the case remains under investigation. The Virginia Beach community is mourning the loss of two dedicated officers who gave their lives in the line of duty.
