Colby Choate Obituary, Death News – On Sunday evening, a fatal four-vehicle accident occurred on Interstate 35 along the Kansas Turnpike south of Wichita, resulting in one death and one serious injury. The incident happened at around 5:50 p.m. on I-35 in Sumner County, approximately three miles west of Belle Plain.
According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the crash began when a 2024 Toyota Crown was traveling north in the southbound lanes of I-35. The Toyota collided with a 2013 Ford Explorer SUV, causing the Toyota to roll over. Following this initial impact, the Ford Explorer was then struck by a 2022 Honda Civic and a 2025 Western Star tractor.
Colby Choate, the 36-year-old driver of the Ford Explorer from Marshall, Oklahoma, was pronounced dead at the scene. The patrol confirmed that Choate was wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
Kap Cung, the 45-year-old driver of the Toyota Crown from Clive, Iowa, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. The patrol reported that Cung was also wearing his seat belt.
Thomas Richter, the 67-year-old driver of the Honda Civic from Edmond, Oklahoma, emerged unscathed from the crash. The patrol noted that Richter was wearing his seat belt.
Similarly, Jason Jones, the 38-year-old driver of the Western Star tractor from West Bay Springs, Mississippi, was not injured. Jones was reported to be wearing his seat belt as well.
All drivers involved were alone in their vehicles, according to the patrol. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol.
