George Freeman Obituary, Death – On Thanksgiving morning, a tragic structure fire in Copperas Cove claimed the life of a 61-year-old man, George Freeman, while his wife and seven children escaped unharmed. Copperas Cove Fire Chief Gary D. Young reported that the alarm came in at approximately 4:33 a.m. from a woman residing in the home on Circle Drive. Responders included two fire engines, three ambulances, a shift supervisor, and several police officers.
Upon arrival, crews encountered flames and heavy smoke emanating from the front and garage sides of the single-family residence. The caller informed them that one individual, Freeman, remained inside the house and was unaccounted for.
Firefighters immediately entered the home, battling dense smoke that rendered visibility nonexistent. While some focused on extinguishing the fire in the garage, others conducted a thorough search of the home. Shortly after entering, firefighters located Freeman and swiftly removed him from the residence.
Freeman was found unresponsive, with no pulse and not breathing. Firefighters performed life-saving measures at the scene, but he could not be revived and was pronounced dead.
The fire, which was brought under control within 30 minutes of the fire department’s arrival, originated in the garage. The blaze caused extensive damage to the garage, dining room, kitchen, and living room, while the remainder of the home suffered significant smoke damage.
The Freeman family, consisting of George’s wife and their seven children, successfully escaped the fire and are safe. They are currently receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Fire Marshal.
