Jahliel Jackson Obituary, Death – A 13-year-old boy from Wilmington has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder following the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man in Newark, Delaware. The teen suspect also faces multiple firearm-related charges.
Authorities took the boy into custody after the shooting, which occurred around 3 p.m. on Sunday near Clarion and Durham courts in the Kimberton section of Newark. The victim, identified as 19-year-old Jahliel Jackson, was transported to Christiana Hospital in a private vehicle, but he succumbed to his injuries.
Residents of the neighborhood were shocked by the incident. Witnesses reported hearing several consecutive gunshots. Carl Lee, who lives nearby, recalled, “I was just sitting upstairs in my room, and then all of a sudden, I heard six shots back to back.” Another resident, Shane Hamby, added, “It was very distinctive. We heard, like, pop, pop, pop, pop.”
Law enforcement officials roped off a large section of the neighborhood to investigate the crime scene. The area, typically considered safe, is home to many young families. “It’s normally a pretty safe area; we really don’t have a lot of crime over here,” Hamby noted.
The 13-year-old suspect is currently being held at the New Castle County Detention Center after failing to post a $170,000 cash bail. His name has not been released, and authorities have not provided details regarding a possible motive for the shooting.
Investigators are still gathering information about the case. Authorities urge anyone with details about the incident to contact Detective Bruhn at (302) 395-8120, email Thomas.Bruhn@newcastlede.gov, or call the New Castle County Division of Police’s non-emergency number at (302) 573-2800.
