John Hughan Obituary, Death – An 81-year-old man from Cape Cod has been charged in connection with a fatal car accident that occurred on August 30, resulting in the death of a 14-year-old boy and serious injuries to two other individuals, according to police. Peter Richmond, a resident of Yarmouth Port, faces a charge of motor vehicular homicide by negligent operation, as confirmed by Yarmouth police. The charges follow an investigation by the Yarmouth Police Department and accident reconstruction teams that took place over the past week.
The deceased teen has been identified as John Hughan from Norwell. Police report that Hughan was working on a boat trailer with his uncle on the side of North Main Street when the accident happened. Richmond was driving a 2020 Cadillac Escalade, which collided with the trailer from behind, causing fatal injuries to Hughan.
The boat trailer had been rendered inoperable due to a broken axle, prompting Hughan and others to stop and attempt repairs. The crash occurred around 1 p.m., prompting multiple 911 calls from witnesses who reported the incident near the intersection of North Main Street and Great Western Road.
Hughan was pronounced dead at the scene, while two other individuals involved in the accident were transported to Cape Cod Hospital with serious injuries. Richmond stayed at the scene and cooperated with the police investigation.
Residents in the area have expressed concerns about traffic safety, noting that despite previous attempts to improve road safety, accidents continue to occur. David Fellows, a local resident, questioned how such an incident could happen in broad daylight with the vehicle partially off the road. Sam Medeiros, another resident, mentioned that this accident is part of a troubling pattern, as it is not the first, second, or third accident in the area.
The police are seeking any additional information regarding the crash. Individuals with details about the incident are encouraged to contact the police at 508-775-0445.
