Khurram Shahzad Obituary, Death – A tragic accident in Nanuet on Thursday led to the death of a 44-year-old man from Albany, who was crushed by his own truck while attempting to address a mechanical problem. According to Clarkstown Police Detective Norm Peters, Khurram Shahzad, a resident of Albany, was operating a 1994 Grumman food truck traveling westbound on Prospect Street around 3 p.m. when it unexpectedly broke down near the intersection with S. Lexow Avenue.
Shahzad, realizing the truck had stalled, shifted it into park and then exited the vehicle to inspect the issue. He sought help from a friend who had been following him in another car, asking the friend to assist in moving the truck to a side street by backing it up.
The friend, a 39-year-old man whose name has not been released, entered the food truck and shifted it into neutral. Shahzad, who was positioned behind the vehicle, was attempting to guide the friend as the truck began to roll backward. However, the truck’s brakes failed, and the vehicle continued to move despite the efforts to stop it. Tragically, Shahzad was struck by the truck and suffered severe injuries.
Emergency responders from Clarkstown Police, Nanuet Community Ambulance Corps, and Rockland Paramedics quickly arrived at the scene and tried to provide life-saving assistance to Shahzad. The 39-year-old driver stayed at the location and cooperated with authorities throughout the emergency response. Despite their efforts, Shahzad was transported to Montefiore Nyack Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries.
The Clarkstown Police Department has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Detective Peters confirmed that the department’s Accident Investigation Unit is actively looking into the cause of the mechanical failure and the tragic events that followed. Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to come forward and provide any additional information to help with the ongoing investigation. Individuals with relevant details are encouraged to contact the Clarkstown Police at 845-639-5800.
This incident serves as a somber reminder of the potential dangers involved in dealing with vehicle malfunctions, particularly when mechanical issues lead to unpredictable circumstances. As the investigation continues, the community remains shocked by the loss of a life under such tragic and avoidable circumstances.
