Laurentino Marcos-Guzman Obituary, Death – Authorities in Lake County have identified the man who died in a single-vehicle crash earlier this week in unincorporated Mundelein. According to the Lake County Coroner’s Office, the victim was 72-year-old Laurentino Marcos-Guzman, a resident of Mundelein.
The crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, near the intersection of Route 60/83 and Taylor Lake Court. Deputies from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene following reports of a collision. Upon arrival, they discovered a Toyota SUV that had crashed into a guardrail.
The driver, later confirmed to be Marcos-Guzman, was found inside the vehicle unconscious and not breathing. Emergency responders immediately transported him to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in an effort to save his life. Despite the medical team’s best efforts, Marcos-Guzman was pronounced dead shortly after arrival in the emergency department.
Initial findings from the crash investigation revealed that for reasons not immediately clear, the Toyota had crossed the center line of the road. It then veered into the opposite lane of traffic before colliding with a guardrail. Notably, there were no other vehicles involved in the incident, and the damage to the SUV was described as minor.
As is standard in fatal crashes, the Lake County Coroner’s Office performed an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The procedure was conducted on Friday, April 11, and preliminary results suggest that Marcos-Guzman may have suffered a fatal medical episode that precipitated the crash. Although the specific nature of the medical event has not been released, investigators believe it may have rendered the driver incapacitated, leading him to lose control of the vehicle.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office has assigned its Technical Crash Investigations Team to continue examining the circumstances surrounding the incident. The team is working to gather more information that could shed light on the moments leading up to the crash, including whether any preexisting medical conditions or other factors may have contributed.
Authorities have not disclosed any toxicology findings or whether there were signs of a heart attack, stroke, or another medical condition, though such details may emerge pending further medical examination and toxicology testing. At this stage, foul play and external causes have not been suspected, and the crash appears to be an unfortunate consequence of a medical emergency.
Officials have extended their condolences to the family of Mr. Marcos-Guzman. No other individuals were injured in the crash, and no passengers were reported to have been in the vehicle at the time.
The portion of Route 60/83 where the crash occurred remained closed for a short period while authorities cleared the scene and conducted their preliminary investigation. Traffic in the area returned to normal shortly afterward.
While the crash itself caused only minor vehicle damage and involved no other motorists, it serves as a reminder of how sudden medical emergencies can lead to tragic outcomes on the road. Experts advise older drivers and those with known health conditions to have regular medical check-ups and discuss any risks with their healthcare providers, especially when driving regularly.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office continues to ask any witnesses or individuals with additional information about the incident to come forward. Anyone who may have seen the vehicle shortly before the crash or noticed anything unusual is encouraged to contact the authorities as the investigation continues.
As the investigation remains active, further updates are expected to be released by the Sheriff’s Office or the Coroner’s Office once all findings, including toxicology reports and final autopsy results, are completed.
For now, the community of Mundelein mourns the loss of a longtime resident, and officials remain focused on closing the case with as much clarity as possible to provide answers to the family and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
