Paul Olivares, Lorraine Reyna Obituary, Death – A tragic shooting at a bar in Hammond, Indiana, early Sunday morning claimed the lives of two people and left three others wounded. Authorities have identified the deceased as 58-year-old Lorraine Reyna and 25-year-old Paul Olivares. Meanwhile, police continue to investigate the incident and are preparing to file charges against a person of interest.
The Incident
The shooting took place at the Portside Pub, located at 1516 Indianapolis Boulevard, around 4 a.m. Officers responded to a report of gunfire and arrived at the scene to find the bar’s entrance riddled with bullets. Inside, they discovered five victims who had been shot.
Two of the victims—Reyna and Olivares—were pronounced dead at the scene. The three others sustained injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals, with two listed in serious condition. Authorities have not yet released their names or provided updates on their conditions.
Victims Remembered
Reyna’s family described her as someone who always put others before herself. According to her sister, who preferred not to appear on camera, Reyna had a nurturing personality and was often the one to step in and help others in need.
“They would do anything for anybody,” said Jernigan, a family member. “Lori cared about people more than she cared about herself. She would extend her hand to anybody that needed her help.”
Possible Motive and Investigation
Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute. Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. stated that the incident began in the parking lot adjacent to the bar.
According to McDermott, Reyna and Olivares were attempting to de-escalate the situation when they were fatally shot.
“Two people lost their lives last night, and they shouldn’t have lost their lives,” McDermott said. “They were good Samaritans, quite frankly, and that’s sad.”
In addition to investigating the shooting, officials are also looking into the bar’s operating hours. McDermott noted that the establishment was supposed to be closed at 3 a.m., meaning it was illegally open at the time of the incident. The city plans to address the matter on Monday.
Legal Actions and Next Steps
Police have a person of interest in custody and are working to file formal charges. Officials have not disclosed the individual’s identity or the specific charges they may face. However, authorities have indicated that legal action will be taken as soon as Monday.
The shooting remains under investigation, and authorities encourage anyone with information to come forward.
