Pedro Castillo Obituary, Death – Authorities have confirmed the identity of the 49-year-old man who tragically lost his life on Friday after falling from a paddleboard at Quail Creek Reservoir. Pedro Castillo, a resident of Cedar City, was paddleboarding with his wife and daughter at approximately 4:30 p.m. on August 23 when strong winds caused all three to be thrown into the water. According to Cedar City police, none of the individuals were wearing life jackets at that time.
A ranger from the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation, who was in the vicinity, promptly responded upon observing the paddleboards being swept away. The ranger, along with a bystander who came to assist, successfully rescued Castillo’s wife and daughter but unfortunately discovered Castillo face down in the water.
Once Castillo was brought aboard the ranger’s boat, CPR was performed. It was estimated that he had been submerged for around 30 seconds before assistance arrived. Despite the life-saving measures and the support of additional first responders, Castillo was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 5:15 p.m.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
“The Utah Division of State Parks expresses its condolences to the family and friends of Pedro Castillo,” stated the authorities. “We also wish to extend our gratitude to the other responding agencies that provided assistance, including the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation, Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue, and Intermountain Life Flight.”
