Sgt. Jeremy Cole Obituary, Death – A Massachusetts police sergeant, Jeremy Cole, tragically lost his life early on Thanksgiving morning in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 95. The crash occurred just after midnight when a Tesla was reported to be driving south in the northbound lanes of I-95. State Police received calls about the wrong-way vehicle and officers quickly responded, spotting the Tesla in the Newburyport area.
In an effort to prevent further collisions, law enforcement set up a tire-deflation device in Georgetown, intending to stop the Tesla before it caused any more damage. However, before the device could be deployed, the Tesla collided head-on with a Chevrolet Trailblazer near mile marker 81 in Newbury.
The driver of the Trailblazer, identified as Endicott College Police Sgt. Jeremy Cole, was pronounced dead at the scene. Sgt. Cole, 41, was returning home after completing his evening shift at Endicott College. His chief, Kerry Ramsdell, expressed deep sorrow for the loss, stating, “On this Thanksgiving Day, our hearts are with the family, friends, and loved ones of a police officer who reported for duty keeping the rest of us safe and secure but did not return home.” Ramsdell acknowledged the profound grief within the department, highlighting the difficulty of losing a dedicated officer.
The driver of the Tesla, a man in his 40s, sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital. Authorities have stated that he will likely face charges related to the crash. Following the incident, state police closed down the highway in both directions to conduct their investigation and provide rescue services.
The Massachusetts State Police investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing, with further details yet to be released.
