Shahid Burke Oituary, Death – Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred in the early hours of Friday, February 28, in Colorado Springs. The El Paso County Coroner confirmed that 24-year-old Shahid Burke was killed in the incident, which police are investigating as a homicide.
Shooting Incident Unfolds
According to the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of North Academy Boulevard near Galley Road around 2:45 a.m. on Friday after receiving reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they found evidence confirming that shots had been fired but did not locate a victim at the scene. Witnesses informed police that a man had been shot, entered a vehicle, and left the area before officers arrived.
A short time later, authorities were alerted to a shooting victim at a local hospital. When officers arrived, they found Burke, who had succumbed to his injuries. Investigators later determined he was the victim from the earlier shooting on North Academy Boulevard.
Victim Identified as Active-Duty Soldier
Following an autopsy conducted by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office, Burke was officially identified as the victim. While the coroner will determine the exact cause and manner of death, CSPD has classified the case as a homicide.
Burke was an active-duty soldier stationed at Fort Carson, serving in the U.S. Army for more than five years. He was assigned to the 2-23 Infantry Regiment, part of the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
Col. Anthony Keller, commander of the brigade, expressed grief over Burke’s death, emphasizing the impact of his loss.
“The 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team family is devastated by the loss of Sgt. Shahid Burke. He was an instrumental member of the Raider team, and his loss will be felt across the brigade,” Keller said. “Our hearts are with Burke’s family and all who knew him during this difficult time. We are committed to supporting our Soldiers struggling with this sudden and tragic loss.”
Ongoing Investigation
Burke’s death marks the 11th homicide in Colorado Springs in 2025, a significant increase from the six homicides recorded at the same time last year.
Police have not released any details about potential suspects or a possible motive in the shooting. The investigation remains active as authorities work to determine the circumstances surrounding Burke’s death.
As the case unfolds, law enforcement is urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. Meanwhile, Burke’s military community, friends, and family continue to mourn his sudden and tragic passing.
