The Alaska State Troopers responded to reports of a fatal avalanche in Turnagain Pass around 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. The area, located south of Anchorage on the Kenai Peninsula, is popular among snowmachiners and outdoor enthusiasts.
Witnesses reported that the avalanche was triggered by a juvenile male, who became trapped under the snow. His body was located in a challenging and unstable area, delaying recovery efforts.
Victim Identified
The victim was identified as 16-year-old Tucker Challans from Soldotna, Alaska. His body was recovered around 11:00 a.m. on Sunday by the Alaska Mountain Rescue Group.
Recovery Efforts and Avalanche Conditions
At the time of the avalanche, Challans and a group of snowmachiners were riding on the backside of Seattle Ridge, just northwest of the Seward Highway. His body was later found in an area known as Warmup Bowl, also called the “-1 Bowl” by snowmachiners.
